melbourne gets intimate with ysl

yves saint laurent
You'd be forgiven for thinking Melbourne '08...YSL, circa '70s
Not long after ACMI presented the Chanel on Film season in March this year, we were saddened to hear of the passing of another great fashion icon - Yves Saint Laurent.

Yves Saint Laurent on Film honours YSL's career on the screen, including documentaries on his life and times and the appearance of his elegant designs in films such as Belle de Jour and The Hunger, exquisitely inhabited by his muse Catherine Deneuve (who, coincidently, was also in Melbourne this March).

There's a couple of Melbourne connections so far. But we've done a bit of research, and it turns out that although he favoured our wool, the man himself never visited Australia.

A shame, because we think Yves Saint Laurent would have felt right at home in Melbourne. Was he reading our weather forecasts when he defined elegance as a black turtleneck, pants and a raincoat? When you add to that his wish that he had invented jeans, the fashion de rigeur of inner Melbourne urbanites almost starts to sound like catwalk couture!

Complete your outfit with a safari jacket or a thigh-high boot and you'll be ready to strut your stuff at ACMI for this glamorous film season, presented to coincide with Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.
