Voss - An Opera in Two Acts
Based on Patrick White's brutal and wrenching 1957 novel, Voss was transformed into an opera and captured on film by the ABC, the Opera's main libretto fine-tuned by author David Malouf.
This musical version follows very closely the novel's fated romance between German explorer Voss and the orphaned Laura. As Voss travels across the Australian continent, he and Laura exchange a series of letters drawing these two outsiders together.
Richard Meale's music binds the story together, its final rendering coming off as a passionate, epic poem.
Featuring Geofrey Chard and Marilyn Richardson.
Recorded at the Victorian Arts Centre 28 March 1987.
"...it has inspired in Meale music which at times reaches such heights of passionate, elemental power that only the operas of Janacek seem to offer some sort of an adequate comparison" The Bulletin
