Conjuring the spirit of Bergman's relationship films, Ozon's exquisitely crafted drama about the inner workings of a marriage is simply masterful.
5 x 2 opens with Marion (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi) and Giles (Stephane Freiss) uneasily signing divorce papers. We are then propelled backwards through their lives: childbirth, nuptials, their first encounter.
Ozon uses the reverse narrative structure to momentous effect, allowing the audience to organically discover the subtle sources of dissatisfaction that lead the couple to their ultimate decision. With outstanding performances throughout,
5 x 2 performs as any trenchant adult drama should, revelatory and achingly heartbreaking.
