Kiss the Girls: Make Them Cry (1979)
Videotape, colour, sound, 6:50 min

Explores the relationships between power and submission in mass culture.

Tackling imagery from the television industry and mass culture, Dara Birnbaum isolates and repeats excerpts from the celebrity game show Hollywood Squares, disrupting the regular flow of the programme to focus attention on the faces of the participants and their stereotyped responses.

Through precise re-editing Birnbaum seeks to bring out the underlying meanings of these gestures and expressions and show the way in which body language is coded according to the relationship between gender and power.
