Switch (1996) Multiple video installations, cloth dolls, colour, sound
Various dolls with projected faces playfully examine notions of identity.
Switch comprises a series of works whose placement throughout the gallery space is unexpected and irreverent. Drawing on traditions of puppetry and street theatre, Tony Oursler utilises various cloth dolls and projections to expand on his preoccupation with contemporary identity, and to explore notions of theory vs. everyday experience.
A provocative element is expressed in the interactions between dolls, who engage and confront viewers with their ramblings, musings, speculations and directions.
