Simon Roylance knew in advance that Saturday 7th of February, 2009 - a day that came to be known as Black Saturday - was going to be a particularly dangerous day. At age 16, he was a senior member of the Country Fire Authority. By 2009, Simon had spent 15 years associated with the Wallan CFA.

Teacher Education Kit - Living with Disaster

The Living with Disaster: Stories and Experiences from Disaster project recounts the stories of eight young people involved and affected by the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria 2009 and two young people affected by flooding near Newcastle, NSW in 2007. The stories are powerful evocations of young people dealing with the experiences of disaster. Through their stories and along with comprehensive learning resources, teachers and students are able to have a structured discussion about the issues and realities of such events. The project was developed as part of the Attorney-General's Department Emergency Management For Schools education program.
