Awakenings
Based on the writings of Dr Oliver Sacks, Awakenings is an inspiring tale that celebrates the joy of life and discovery.

Dr Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) arrives at a mental hospital to find a number of patients suffering post-encephalitis, a rare disease rendering them in a permanently catatonic state.

After trialling a new treatment on patient Leonard Lowe (De Niro) Sayer has a breakthrough and before long the ward is alive with people who have been asleep for most of their adult life.

Garnering numerous Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Screenplay and Best Actor (for De Niro), Penny Marshall's moving real life drama also won De Niro a National Board of Review award for his amazing life-affirming performance.
