| A Bronx Tale |
Robert De Niro's first feature as director (and the first production for his company TriBeCa Films) is full of the intimate, often poignant, observations of someone lovingly portraying his own neighbourhood on screen.
Calogero Anello is a streetwise youngster whose father Lorenzo (De Niro) fights to keep him from being corrupted by the environment in which they live. The boy witnesses a murder but refuses to identify the perpetrator, Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), the local crime boss he has long admired.
Acclaimed as an actor's director, De Niro's choice of script (written by Palminteri and based on his own, one-man stage show), locale and actors (Joe Pesci makes a late appearance) also had critics underscoring the connection to the work of Scorsese.
