| The Godfather II |
Winning De Niro his first Oscar (Best Supporting Actor) for the role of the young Vito Corleone,
The Godfather II is an undoubted cinema classic.
Coppola's epic continues the saga of the Corleone crime family, tracing back to the early life of Vito Corleone (De Niro) fleeing Sicily to build a new life (and subsequent crime empire) in New York. The film then advances to follow Vito's son Michael (Al Pacino) as the next don setting out to control new territories.
Grandiose in its scope and tragedy,
The Godfather II not only solidified Coppola's reputation in Hollywood, becoming the first sequel to win Best Picture, but set a new benchmark for the gangster genre.
