http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ Scratch It: Animated Art profiles the animated works of New Zealand artist Len Lye. Lye was an innovator in a diverse range of arts including painting, sculpture, photography, writing and film. As a filmmaker he took the principles of 'persistence of vision' to a new level and pioneered 'direct film', animation made without a camera, by painting and scratching images directly onto celluloid. Len Lye was passionately influenced by patterns and rhythms in nature, indigenous art and music.
This program is designed to:
- introduce students to the experimental filmmaking of artist Len Lye and encourage discussion on the creative influences that shaped his art
- explore the effects of different forms of animation and the relationship between the moving image, pattern, composition and music.
During this program students will:
- use Photoshop to create a digital 'scratch it' animation
- create music and titles for their animation.
