Screening Melbourne An ACMI production workshop for primary years

Screening Melbourne
Bud Tingwell in Screening Melbourne

Screening Melbourne is designed for primary Years 3-5. Students will be introduced to Professor Oldendays, played by Bud Tingwell, via the moving image. The Professor is in great need of intrepid reporters to time-travel 'Back to the Past' in old Melbourne town for his TV show.

Students interact with historical footage as their reports compare Melbourne locations from last century with the present. What has changed? What is the same?

This program supports the implementation of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), drawing together the three strands and supporting student growth across the domains.

Screening Melbourne is designed to encourage students to develop an appreciation for the art and the craft behind the moving image in its many forms by developing their ability to think beyond the screen.

Screening Melbourne aims to develop students' understanding of ways in which film-makers create screen texts.

Students will learn:

  • camera techniques such as framing, shot types, and angles
  • some of the features of the documentary genre
  • the magic of green-screen technology.

During their ACMI excursion students will:

  • participate in the filming of scenes in the ACMI TV studio
  • act in their own scene
  • work as production crew while shooting another group's scene
  • and view their ACMI creations.

Teacher Materials

Screening Melbourne and activities provided in the accompanying Teacher Kit are designed to assist students to develop a range of screen literacy outcomes. The program is also designed to assist students to develop learning outcomes across key learning areas. This includes development of understandings about how and why Melbourne has changed and continues to change to meet the needs and wants of its population, and to develop an appreciation of the effects of change.
