It's the summer of 1969 and the living is easy for young Willie (newcomer Rocky McKenzie) growing up in the West Australian pearling port of Broom. The happy-go-lucky teen spends his time hanging out with his mates, going fishing and wooing the lovely Rosie (singer Jessica Mauboy, in her acting debut).
His mother has other ideas and has Willie despatched to a Catholic boarding school in Perth where he falls out with a cantankerous cleric, Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush), and runs away.
Rachel Perkins' joyful Oz outback musical is an "energetic, star-studded road trip" (Melbourne International Film Festival) with a terrific cast of home-grown talent that also features Ernie Dingo as Uncle Tadpole (reprising his role in the ground-breaking 1990 Jimmy Chi stage musical Perkins' film is based on), Deborah Mailman, Magda Szubanski and singer-songwriter Missy Higgins.
