Bright Star
Jane Campion's sublime costume drama, which had its world premiere in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, draws on the empassioned correspondence that charted the real-life romance between English poet John Keats and the young woman he adored, Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), who lived in a cottage adjacent the living quarters Keats shared with a patron at Hampstead Heath.
The acclaimed director of films including The Piano (1993) and The Portrait of a Lady (1996) - and only one of four women filmmakers to ever be nominated for a Best Director Academy Award - Campion continues her fascinating exploration of the romantic impulse, infusing a genre more commonly expresssed through melodrama with a more reflective and ultimately more deeply affecting sensibility.
