The Concert
Andrei Filipov (Alexei Guskov), a disgraced former conductor of the Bolshoi Orchestra, demoted to the level of cleaner at the august cultural institution, chances upon an irresistible opportunity to set things right.
When the Theatre du Chatelet forwards a last-minute proposal inviting the famed Bolshoi Orchestra to perform in Paris, Filipov intercepts the fax and resolves to reunite his former band of musicians to recapture their former glory, if only for as long as it takes to perform Tchaikovsky's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.
Mihaileanu's film strays into good-natured absurdist comedy from time to time, but the emotional pay-off and stirring finale offer a moving and dramatically satisfying conclusion.
Rising French actress Mélanie Laurent is perfectly cast as a star violinist who performs with Filipov's orchestra and veteran actress, Miou Miou (May Fools), lends notable subtlety and elegance to her role as a music agent.
