Jon Amiel's poignant drama is adapted from the memoir by British conservationist, Randal Keynes, Charles Darwin's great-great grandson.
Paul Bettany takes up the role of the pre-eminent nineteenth century scientist whose masterwork, On The Origin of Species, challenged the precepts of the age and the tenets of faith that governed the lives of those nearest and dearest to him and that indeed threatened to estrange him from his deeply devout wife, Emma (played by Jennifer Connelly, Bettany's real-life wife).
The couple's unresolved grief over the death of their ten year-old daughter, Annie, a spirited, inquisitive child felled by scarlet fever, bedevils Darwin further, as he struggles to commit his provocative theories of evolution to the page.
