Red like the Sky
When ten-year-old Mirco is blinded in an accident, he suffers the additional trauma of being separated from his parents and school-friends and sent to an institution for the blind in Genoa - as per the dictates of Italian law at the time (the early 1970s) which did not permit visually-impaired children from being educated in the general school system.
Mirco has no interest in adapting to his limitations by learning Braille. When he finds a disused reel-to-reel tape recorder, he discovers that he is highly adept at creating and layering sounds to 'tell' stories.
Based on the childhood experiences of Mirco Mencacci, one of Italy's most gifted sound recordists, Red like the Sky is an unsentimental yet genuinely uplifting film that dramatises the struggle of a young boy who asserts his right to a life which fosters creativity in the face of institutional resistance.
"Mirco (Luca Capriotti) is full of moxie and stubbornness, a ready-made pint-sized movie hero. Bortone applies a solid command of emotional build and crescendos...superb" Variety
