The Bad and the Beautiful
James Bartlow (Dick Powell), a self-important Pultizer prize-winning author, is cajoled by his wife (Gloria Grahame) into accepting an invitation to relocate to Hollywood.
Once there, wily studio head Jonathan Shields (Kirk Douglas) talks him into taking up residence as a scriptwriter. However, Bartlow is wary of 'selling out' to the glitz and seedy glamour of show business.
Douglas, Grahame and Lana Turner add megawatt star power to Minnelli's hugely entertaining Hollywood exposé, which skilfully blends melodrama and satire.
Somewhat ironically, the film went on to win five Oscars, including Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Gloria Grahame.
