Romero's sequel to his seminal Night of the Living Dead (1968) offers an apocalyptic vision of society disintegrating into chaos. The living dead of the original film have effectively taken over and the world is in a parlous state of collapse. A band of disparate survivors find themselves holed up in an abandoned department store while the encroaching masses of undead gravitate to their once beloved malls; a sly satire on the dehumanizing effect of rampant consumerism. Produced by Italian horror maestro, Dario Argento, Dawn of the Dead also marks Romero's first collaboration with make-up effects guru, Tom Savini (who makes a brief appearance as a marauding biker).
