This delirious cross-genre horror begins with a sniper randomly killing people in a busy New York street. Apprehended by police, he confesses that he was compelled to kill 'by God'. The premise spins intriguingly out of control as Detective Nicholas (an excellent performance by Tony Lo Bianco) follows a lead in the case to a cult that may or may not have something to do with extraterrestrials. As always in Cohen's films, a heady mix of 'B picture' sensibility and unflinching social commentary, God Told Me To plugs right into the moral disorder of the American psychic landscape of the 1970s and reveals a very paranoid state of affairs in the process.
