|Cast of The Footy Show|
In a year where sport and its stars have lived all over the front pages for reasons they would have preferred not to, The Age columnist Leaping Larry L takes a look at the symbiotic, and sometimes idiotic, relationship between sport, its players, its ruling bodies and the electronic and print media.
Superstar egos created and destroyed, damage control - pro, con and way too late, the ever-delightful Public-Media-Sport triangle, and, of course, the Footytainment shows.
We better talk about it now - next year, they might cancel the games, and just show the controversy.
Leaping Larry L has been a regular freelance contributor to The Age newspaper since 2000. He regularly reviews television coverage of sport in the 'Telly Talk' column in the Sunday Age sport section, writes the satirical 'Leaping Larry's Letterbox' column for Saturday's Age sport section, and festoons TV advertising with over-ripe tomatoes for kicks in his The Green Guide column 'Ad Nausea', on Thursdays.
His media sport involvement has included a year of producing ABC radio Saturday football coverage (1987), producing nightly and weekly sport shows on the mid-80s talk version of 3AK, subsequent on-air sport discussion on ABC radio, a stint writing for Nine's The Footy Show, and a couple of years, and still counting, as a regular guest on 3AW's 'Sports Today' show, discussing media coverage of sport.
