In the first part of his Masterclass with Margaret Pomeranz (At the Movies), Tim Burton discusses his childhood in suburban Burbank, where he embraced drawing and monster movies. He considers the effect of being categorised as "weird' by his peers and his resulting outsider view of the world.

Burton also talks about the transformative effects of costume and character, and describes his early "lucky break" in the form of a scholarship at CalArts and his time working at Disney.
