Distinguished performances from Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård further elevate the highly anticipated return of Danish-Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier.
Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are sisters grappling with unresolved trauma and the uncertainty of their futures when their filmmaker father, Gustav (Skarsgård), returns to make a biopic of their late mother.
Trier tackles the journeys of these characters with the subtle, darkly comic touch and grounded realism that have defined his work. The auteur’s deft dissection of complex familial relations is illuminated to the highest level by the natural, exquisite performances of his cast.
Receiving the prestigious 2025 Cannes Grand Prix award, Sentimental Value owes much to the Oslo house filled with memories of sorrow and sadness in which the story unfolds, akin to a mythical Norse fairytale layered with hidden secrets.
With grace and empathy, it explores the volatile power of art and the cost of making highly personal work.
