Director Jafar Panahi courts danger when he temporarily relocates to a village near the Turkish-Iranian border.
It has been 15 years since the Islamic Revolutionary Court sentenced director Jafar Panahi to imprisonment and bans on filmmaking and leaving Iran.
No Bears sees the director (now released from prison and house arrest) arrive at a village provocatively close to the Turkish border. From there, he remotely – and secretly – supervises a film being shot in Turkey via an online video feed. Soon, his stay in the village and the production run into trouble.
No Bears premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
In 2025, Jafar Panahi's mysterious new film, A Simple Accident, will screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
