Join us in the cinema for the new 4K restoration of the Greek Weird Wave classic directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and produced by Athina Rachel Tsangari.

Three sheltered siblings, now adults, live with their parents in a compound, having never breached its perimeter. According to their parents, it’s too dangerous outside and, after all, children only leave home when their canine teeth fall out.

Lied to, manipulated and kept in a naive, childlike stasis by their controlling father and quietly complicit mother, they’re entertained with games in the back garden and by the pool. When a sex worker, who is carefully invited into the home as an outlet for the son, breaks the family’s strict rules, certain realities of the outside world soon begin to trickle in.

Curator’s Note

Yorgos Lanthimos’ unnervingly volatile drama is challenging to categorise. David Lynch called it a fantastic comedy. Critic Aaron Hills deemed it an absurdist horror. Dogtooth is both things, but it’s also an alluring trap that snaps on its audience. There is a darkness throughout the film that hides in plain sight, ironically basking in the beautiful Greek summer sun.

Dogtooth premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Prix Un Certain Regard. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)

Dogtooth has the surrealism of Buñuel, the scalpel of Haneke, the underground horror of a thriller without the splatter. Perfect.
