Frances McDormand embodies kindness, resilience and quiet stoicism in the role that earned her second and third Academy Awards.
The town of Empire, Nevada has virtually disappeared. After the gypsum plant closed, the postcode was discontinued. Fern (Frances McDormand) now lives on the road in her van, Vanguard, making ends meet with shifts at an Amazon fulfilment centre.
Curator’s note
Of course, it's subjective, but it's often easy to identify what it is that makes some films good – you might notice it in the moment or reflect on it afterwards. Nomadland is an altogether different beast. On paper, a film comprised of quiet conversations spoken between sips of hot tea on fold-up chairs doesn't sound compelling, but Chloé Zhao's masterwork is enthralling at every turn.
Nomadland premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received the coveted Golden Lion prize. Since then, it has gone on to win an astonishing number of awards, including three Academy Awards for Best Motion Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.
Nomadland is achingly beautiful and sad, a profound work of empathy from Zhao. It's a true elegy, a lament for the dead, a yearning for the lost.
