An uncompromising portrait of four teenage girls coming of age in suburban L.A. at the tail end of the disco era.
San Fernando Valley, late 70s, four teenage girls grapple with friendship, sexuality, love and their fractured family life. Boy-loving Diedre is the disco queen of the group, Madge is the shy one, desperate to lose her virginity, Annie is the rebellious one, who masks her pain in alcohol and drugs (played by The Runaways, Cherie Currie) and Jeanie (Jodie Foster) is the sensible one who looks out for them all.
Curator’s note
Loosely inspired by Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, screenwriter Gerald Ayres wondered what story Alcott would tell if she was transported to the San Fernando Valley in the 70s. The debut feature of commercials director Adrian Lynne (Flashdance, 1983), the film would be the first of several collaborations he would have with composer Giorgio Moroder. Featuring as its theme the Moroder produced On The Radio, the double album soundtrack went on to be a huge hit and featured many of Moroder’s collaborators including, Donna Summer, Sparks and Harold Faltermeyer.
The movie's a rare attempt to provide a portrait of the way teen-agers really do live today in some suburban cultures.
