A sure-footed Jafar Panahi courts unseen danger when he relocates to an Iranian village near the Turkish border.

It has been 12 years since Jafar Panahi was arrested. The Islamic Revolutionary Court sentenced the director to imprisonment and banned him from making films or leaving Iran. Now out of prison, Panahi (playing a fictionalised version of himself) relocates to a village provocatively close to the Turkish border.  From here, he remotely – and secretly – supervises a film being produced in nearby Turkey via an online video feed.

Invisible dangers circle around Panahi, and soon both his stay in the village and the production run into trouble.

Curator’s Note

Jafar Panahi’s film is bold, provocative and imbued with unseen peril.

In July 2022, two months after No Bears was completed, Panahi was arrested again after visiting the prosecutor’s office to seek more information on the legal situations of his fellow film directors: Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Aleahmad. Panahi spent seven months in prison for this, during which time No Bears had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival and received the Special Jury Prize.

Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)

You leave feeling like you’ve just seen a truly extraordinary late work produced by one of the era’s greatest working auteurs, quickly followed by the sense of experiencing a sucker punch.
