Bringing together some of the most iconic films of Australian cinema, this program celebrates Jill Bilcock’s bold and rhythmic editing style.

Across more than five decades of filmmaking, editor Jill Bilcock has shaped some of the most defining works of Australian cinema, helping establish the visual energy and international success of films including Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Muriel's Wedding and Evil Angels.

Bilcock began her career at the Film House in Melbourne during the 1960s, where she formed longstanding creative relationships with filmmakers including Fred Schepisi and Richard Lowenstein. She later achieved international acclaim through her collaborations with Baz Luhrmann on the Red Curtain Trilogy, earning an Academy Award nomination for Moulin Rouge! alongside multiple BAFTA, AFI and AACTA nominations and awards, as well as appointment as a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2018.

Bilcock has become known for an editing style that is bold, rhythmic and emotionally driven. She often describes editing as a form of choreography, shaping rhythm through movement, sound and performance rather than strict continuity alone. Across films as stylistically varied as Dogs in Space, Elizabeth, Head On and Romeo + Juliet, Bilcock adapts her approach to the emotional and formal needs of each project, sometimes using rapid montage and music-driven pacing, and at other times allowing scenes to unfold through long takes, silence and observation.

Editing is often considered an invisible craft, but Bilcock's work argues that editing should be felt by audiences and contribute directly to the authorship, tone and structure of a film. Whether constructing the frenetic energy of Luhrmann’s maximalist cinema or the restrained emotional tension of films such as Road to Perdition, her work consistently foregrounds character, rhythm and emotional experience. Reflecting on her process, Luhrmann remarked in an interview that “to see Jill with a Steenbeck is like seeing a great potter on the wheel,” capturing the instinctive, tactile and deeply creative approach that has defined Bilcock’s enduring contribution to Australian and international cinema.
