Based on a true story and inspired by real freedom fighters, Ann Hui lifts the fog of war to reveal a clear-eyed vision of wartime resistance in Hong Kong.
It’s 1942, during the 2nd World War and the Japanese forces have occupied what was then the British territory of Hong Kong.
Fang Lan is a schoolteacher who lives with her mother in her guesthouse. Her mother rents out rooms to Hong Kong’s writers and intellectuals, but when word arrives that the Japanese plan to execute the intelligentsia, the underground Hong Kong resistance mobilise and Fang Lan is co-opted into trying to smuggle the tenants out of Hong Kong.
Soon, Fang Lan joins the fight for freedom.
By highlighting the value of artists and intellectuals, and the importance of protecting them, she imbues the authentic historical episode with timely universal relevance.
