Miranda July’s adored film marked the arrival of a striking new voice on the international cinema landscape and a remarkably assured feature film debut.

July’s poetic and penetrating observation of people struggling to connect with one another in an isolating contemporary world is brimming with attitude (alternately brazen and coy) and filled with peculiar and endearing characters.

Curator’s note

It’s strange to consider that Me and You and Everyone We Know turned 20 this year. Of course, films age – some faster than others – but July’s debut feature is infused with so much youthful energy that it still feels like it has freshly sprouted out of the ground. Each character feels as new to the world as they are to the audience’s consciousness.

The film marked its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 and received almost unanimous acclaim. It was awarded the Special Jury Prize for originality of vision at Sundance, followed by four awards at Cannes that year, including the Critics Week Grand Prix. It’s a film that is no stranger to ACMI’s screens but one that is ripe for rediscovery, or discovery for first-time viewers.
