Lust, betrayal, and forbidden desire unfold in this sultry, sensorily-charged drama from Lou Ye 娄烨.
In 2009 Nanjing, a love triangle splinters into obsession when a private investigator falls for the man he’s been hired to surveil. Shot guerrilla-style after Lou Ye was banned from filmmaking in China, Spring Fever captures the disarray of passion with a fever-dream intensity.
Premiering at Cannes in 2009, where it won Best Screenplay, Spring Fever is a bold act of cinematic defiance. Lou Ye 娄烨 (Suzhou River, Purple Butterfly), as always, confronts censorship with sensuality and rage. Shot covertly while Lou Ye was under a filmmaking ban in China, Spring Fever pulses with the urgency of forbidden love and political resistance.
Curated by the Chinese Independent Film Foundation and Beijing Queer Film Festival.
