Experience the first chapter of Andy Muschietti’s bone-chilling blockbuster diptych, adapted from Stephen King’s generational horror masterpiece.
Something is rotten in the town of Derry. It’s the summer of 1989, and the small Maine hamlet has been plagued by a string of mysterious child disappearances. To save their town and themselves, a group of secondary school misfits – the self-described Losers’ Club – bands together to defeat the evil stirring beneath the surface of the town, embodied by a murderous, shape-shifting clown called Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård).
The highest-grossing horror film of all time, IT’s blockbuster success helped to cement the ongoing boom in both prestige and mainstream horror, while igniting a second wave of elevated Stephen King cinema. Adapting one of the author’s most sprawling and beloved novels into two parts, director Andy Muschietti’s film reimagines the book’s 1950s-set first half into the late 80s, steeping it in BMX-era nostalgia. Bill Skarsgård delivers a career-making creepy turn as Pennywise the Clown, securing the character’s place in the Halloween horror pantheon.
This new It has more on its mind, and gives more body and voice to King's ideas of childhood anxieties and the corrosive power of fear.
