Frank Darabont’s paranoid supermarket siege is adapted from Stephen King’s bleak tale of small-town monsters – both supernatural and all too human.
The Mist builds toward a climax so wrenching that I hesitate to recommend the film, but I think Darabont earns his vision.
After a violent storm, a mysterious mist rolls into a small Maine community, concealing something deadly. Trapped inside a supermarket, a group of townspeople struggle to survive as supplies dwindle and tensions rise.
Facing mounting hysteria, the residents are forced to choose between the horrors outside and the growing threat of their neighbours within. Who are the real monsters?
Following the wildly successful adaptations of a pair of Stephen King’s more sentimental properties (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), director Frank Darabont’s bleak, slow burn take on The Mist presents an altogether darker proposition. A B-movie creature feature on its surface, Darabont’s edgy ensemble piece exploits genre conventions to craft a very human study of fear, paranoia and mob mentality – culminating in one of the most quietly devastating films in modern horror.
