Wim Wenders’ unique 3D cinematic experience immerses you in the work of one of the greatest contemporary artists of our time, Anselm Kiefer.
In this unique 3D portrait of contemporary German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, we dive headlong into the artist’s work as he contemplates the inspirations and meanings behind some of his most accomplished pieces. Kiefer’s fascination with myths and history informs much of his practice, which often blurs past and present to uncover and expose unspoken truths. This German artist has found himself many times in the crosshairs of history as he provocatively references a past that Germany would soon forget.
Curator’s note
Wim Wenders again adopts the 3D format that served him so well in his inventive 2011 documentary Pina. Shot over two years, Wenders uses 3D to breathtaking effect, bringing you right into Anselm’s art. It’s been fascinating to observe Wenders finding his artistic groove through his portraits of some of the most daring and diverse contemporary artists across the globe, from the Cuban musicians at the heart of Buena Vista Social Club (1999), German contemporary dance choreographer Pina Bausch, Brazilian documentary photographer Sebastião Salgado (The Salt of the Earth, 2014) and now Anselm Kiefer. Ever the cinematic explorer, his use of 3D is nothing short of inspiring, taking the format into surprising and unexpected places.
Wim Wenders documentary Anselm...makes sublime and supple use of the finest 3D film experience I can remember.
