Rewinding time, director Alex Ross Perry builds a collage colossus for cinephiles and videophiles to worship.
Running at three hours, constructed from clips from over 100 films and led by narrator Maya Hawke, Videoheaven is an adoring examination of the video store, lost from the kerbside of the neighbourhood strip mall, but immortalised by the very same videos that once lived within its walls.
Curator’s Note
Video stores hold a special place in the hearts of Gen-Xers, their boomer parents and older millennials alike. However, while there is a nostalgic tone to Alex Ross Perry’s (The Colour Wheel, Queen of Earth) documentary, Videoheaven is equally surefooted in building an immersive picture of the video store for the young and uninitiated.
What is crafted here is comprehensive: at times methodical in form, rigorous in intent, but enormously loving in its outcome. If you frequented the local video store, you’ll mourn your loss, and if you are too young to remember, you might find yourself wishing you were ten years older.
