An electrifying documentary about the indie rock band that redefined the sound of a generation.
Toronto, early 2000s. A group of 20-something musicians led by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning band together to form Broken Social Scene. Their long-time friend and filmmaker Stephen Chung is there with his camera to capture the birth of a movement — and the beautiful, chaotic sprawl of a band that would launch the careers of artists including Feist and define a remarkable creative moment in Toronto's music scene. With never-before-seen archival footage, we witness the band's evolution from house party jams to the global stage, playing Lollapalooza and appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Curator's note
Broken Social Scene came into their own at a pivotal moment, when the internet was hovering on the edge of ubiquity. Their ascent offers a fascinating snapshot of a cultural movement that also gave rise to artists like Peaches, and captures the beginning of a new era in how fans would hear about and connect with music. This is the arrival of Pitchfork and social media, where one glowing review could change the trajectory of a band's career. A 9.2 rating for You Forgot It in People propelled Broken Social Scene to indie rock prominence and signalled things to come. It's All Gonna Break is a love letter to independent music that was too good to last.
…the film’s emotional honesty aligns perfectly with its subject: a profoundly human, flawed, and beautiful musical experiment.
