A wholly singular earthy, (sub)urban strand of Australian avant-garde filmmaking, A Grand Mockery is alive with a kind of pure, youthful energy that is far too rare
Join us after the screening for a discussion with directors Adam C. Briggs & Sam Dixon, moderated by film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
Unconventional, bold and absurdist, A Grand Mockery is the debut collaboration from Brisbane filmmakers Sam Dixon and Adam C. Briggs. Following Josie, a frustrated cinema worker and cemetery wanderer, through the mundanity of casual labour. Shot on rotting Super-8 film, the film descends from dark comedy into something more sinister, echoing the decaying mental state of its protagonist.
Winner of Best Direction – New Visions at the Sitges Film Festival and Winner of Best Feature Film at last year’s edition of SXSW Sydney, A Grand Mockery resurrects the Super-8, community-led approach of Australia’s underground film scene.
