Two girls decide to be bad in an absolute classic from the Czechoslovak New Wave, which sees director Věra Chytilová break all the rules herself.
In this savagely funny and wickedly inventive rampage against work, war, men and materialism, two girls – Marie 1 and Marie 2 – decide that the world has gone bad and so should they. The insatiable duo hit the streets of Prague looking for men to feed them, and along the way they turn every opportunity for mischief into an outrageous, slapstick assault on all things status quo.
Banned in Czechoslovakia for its “depiction of food wastage” (the banquet food fight is legendary), Daisies serves up a visually twisted feast for the senses. Perhaps embodying the film herself, Daisies’ audacious director Věra Chytilová was barred from filmmaking for six years by authorities on the grounds that she lacked “a positive attitude to socialism”.
