With its intense synth tones and ominous Islamic funeral chanting, this distinctly Indonesian horror also references classics like 1979’s Salem’s Lot.
Satan’s Slave follows the family of a successful businessman after his wife, and the mother of his children, dies. The children are besotted with grief, but they all find different ways, albeit unorthodox, to struggle through the pain. To make matters worse, the family starts receiving regular visits from supernatural beings – but these ghosts are far from friendly.
Intertwining traditional Indonesian folklore with classic horror tropes, Satan’s Slave delves into themes of family, faith, betrayal and the supernatural.
Revered for its eerie and suspenseful storytelling, the film was believed to be lost until 2006, when a copy was discovered and distributed by a specialist label in the US. It’s now widely beloved as a cult curio of Indonesian horror.
