The Eye

A blind woman experiences terrifying ghostly encounters when she undergoes a corneal transplant and regains her sight.

Blind since childhood, 20-year-old classical violinist Mun (Angelica Lee) is overjoyed when she regains her sight after successfully receiving a corneal transplant. Her joy at seeing again is cut short, however, when she starts having disturbing visions of ghostly apparitions that seem to foretell impending deaths. With the help of a sympathetic psychotherapist, Mun decides to track down the eye donor and travels to Thailand, where she learns the terrifying secret of the woman whose eyes she now sees through.

Curator's note
Directing siblings Oxide and Danny Pang deliver a creepy tale of second sight that ratchets up the dread as Mun's returning eyesight becomes clearer. Using her blurred vision to great effect, targeting unknown shapes in a darkened room, the film delivers some effective jump scares as the shapes reveal themselves to be something quite sinister. The film's success not only gave new life to Hong Kong's waning horror output but led to inevitable sequels and three remakes, including a US version starring Jessica Alba.
