Sixty thousand years of Yorta Yorta history. 70 years of dispossession.
The summer of 1939 will change the lives of the people of Cummeragunja forever. Alice is nine years old. Her family is everything to her, but this serene world is about to be torn apart. Pecan Summer is an epic tale, deserving of an opera, and the performance is captured in stunning detail. This powerful moment of Reconciliation transformed the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall into Federation Square for the Apology to the Stolen generations.
Australia’s foremost Indigenous soprano, Deborah Cheetham AO will participate in a post screening Q&A. Deborah is the founder of the Short Black Opera Company, and composer of Pecan Summer, Australia’s first Indigenous opera (sung in the Yorta Yorta tongue).
Presented in association with NITV/SBS, Short Black Opera and Federation Square.
