20th Century Women
“Warm and funny, 20th Century Women bursts with the sad, messy, ungovernable beauty of life”
Mike Mills follows up his 2011 feature, Beginners, with a semi-autobiographical film that draws from his teenage years in California and his relationship with his mother during the summer of 1979.
Annette Bening steals the show as Dorothea, a loving single mother mystified by the changes in her 15-year-old son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann). To help guide him through life at a cultural and political moment brimming with change, Dorothea enlists the help of the two women in their orbit: Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited photographer living as a boarder in their home, and Jamie’s crush, Julie (Elle Fanning), a precocious and provocative neighbour.
