“There’s a divinely comical lightness to Binoche here: Even in states of conniption and complaint, she’s floating...”
Elle (Juliette Binoche) is a French antiques dealer, living in the Tuscan countryside. One day she sits in on a talk by visiting English cultural commentator (opera baritone William Shimell) on the value of copies in art. At the end of the talk they meet, and over the course of a single afternoon, they drive into the sun-dappled countryside, have lunch, wander around galleries, discussing the nature of love, art and life. But what really is the nature of their relationship? Have they met before? Are they a couple, or in fact perfect strangers?
A sensation at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival where Juliette Binoche won the Best Actress award, Certified Copy is one of the last great masterpieces from acclaimed filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (Ten, Taste of Cherry).
