The Final YearOccasional coarse language
“A real-life version of The West Wing... Deeply moving”
The Final Year tracks the foreign policy team assembled by Barack Obama as the clock counts down on his eight year presidency. Over the course of 2016, Obama’s team travel the world attempting to lock in policies that they hope will define a legacy of promoting an inclusive global view, diplomacy over military action, and which will fundamentally alter how the US government confronts questions of war and peace.
Barker's unprecedented access allows us to follow Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Ambassador Samantha Power, Deputy National Security Advisor and presidential confidant Ben Rhodes, as well National Security Advisor Susan Rice and President Obama himself as they travel as far as China, Cuba, Austria, Laos, Japan, Cameroon, Greenland and Greece. In tandem with these vital diplomatic missions, the intensely fraught work of negotiating outcomes around the Iran nuclear deal, Paris climate accord and brokering a ceasefire in Syria while under pressure to intervene militarily continues apace.
As the contest for a Republican presidential candidate narrows and Donald Trump's Twitter feed gains traction in the lead up to the November election, the stakes become ever greater.
