About the artists

In this special ART+FILM event, Sydney-based artists Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra present the first three episodes of the work Ex Nilalang, 'Balud, Dyesebel and Lolo ex Machina' from 2015, as well as the brand new fourth episode commissioned for Asia TOPA. The screening is followed by a conversation with Justin and Bhenji about their unique creative practice that explores the intersections of art, performance, film and identity.

Ex Nilalang is a cumulative performance video project by Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra, who share Australian-Filipino ancestry. The project explores queer mythological figures from the Filipino diaspora. The artists use intricately crafted costumes, prostheses, masks, movement and sound to transform their bodies into fantastical otherworldly creatures.

ART+FILM is a regular free monthly program showcasing rarely-screened, short and feature-length works by leading Australian and international moving image artists.

Ex Nilalang is supported by the KMATS Endowment Fund and Arts Centre Melbourne for Asia TOPA.

Asia TOPA is a joint initiative of the Sidney Myer Fund and Arts Centre Melbourne and is supported by the Australian and Victorian Governments.
