“…the film is mesmerising…almost hallucinatory…a tender, measured and exquisitely rendered portrait of a quiet, industrious man”
The artistic legacy of Vincent van Gogh is brilliantly rendered in the world’s first fully painted animation; each one of the film’s 65,000 frames is hand-painted by one of the 125 professional painters recruited to work on the film. Set in the year following Van Gogh’s untimely death in 1890, Loving Vincent plays like a murder mystery but never loses sight of the deep and complicated humanity of a man whose work continues to affirm the mystery and power of life.
A cast of English and Irish actors including Saoirse Ronan, Douglas Booth, Chris O’Dowd and Jerome Flynn give voice to characters drawn from Van Gogh’s life in a biographical tale of unexpected revelations that shaped the last months of Vincent’s emotionally turbulent life in the quiet French village of Auvers-sur-Oise.
