“The last completed film of one of the cinema’s great stylists and choreographers... a dazzling musical... with Charisse and Astaire at the top of their dancing form. Irresistible.”
When brash movie producer Steve Canfield (Fred Astaire) attempts to convince a Russian music composer to score his next movie, his methods prove a little too effective. Charmed by the Parisian nightlife, Boroff refuses to return to Russia. Unwilling to lose its national treasure, Moscow dispatches long-limbed Ninotchka Yoschenko (Cyd Charisse) to retrieve the wayward composer.
Adapted from the 1939 Greta Garbo vehicle, Ninotchka, Rouben Mamoulian's accomplished adaptation features music and lyrics by Cole Porter and wonderful set pieces including Astaire and Charisse singing and dancing to Porter's All of You and Fated to be Mated. In the twilight of the Studio era of the Hollywood musical, Silk Stockings also marks the last on screen appearance in a big budget musical for both Astaire and Charisse.
