A United Kingdom
“Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo give beguiling performances… this movie has candour, heartfelt self-belief and an unfashionable conviction that love conquers all...”
In 1947, Oxford-educated Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) meets London office worker, Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike).
Their attraction is instant; the two discover they share a similar worldview (and love of jazz) but their fledgling romance is complicated by the fact that Khama is the prince of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland (modern-day Botswana) and due to return to his homeland to become its king.
Ruth accepts Seretse’s marriage proposal, but their union challenges the powerful status quo at home and abroad.
Asante and screenwriter Guy Hibbert bring this extraordinary chapter of post-war British history to life with warmth and idealism.
