“Agnès Varda's final film is the perfect way for the legendary auteur to have the last word”
Premiering at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival (where she was also awarded the Berlinale Camera), Varda by Agnès combines clips from her films and dramatised reconstructions, along with her own priceless musings.
A coda to her beloved documentary The Beaches of Agnès (2008), this final film offers even greater insight into what drives creativity, Varda's thoughts on specific films and her work as a contemporary gallery artist.
Since her debut feature in 1956 (La Pointe Courte) the beloved auteur has crafted singular narrative films and documentaries (including the Oscar-nominated Faces, Places in 2017). Her legacy is profound and far-reaching. While there’s sadness at her loss to the living world, it’s an absolute pleasure to spend time with this eternally playful filmmaker as she yet again blurs the line between fact and fiction – keeping audiences on their cinematic toes.
Please note: this screening will take place at The Capitol while ACMI at Fed Square is closed for redevelopment.
