At the height of WWII, the tiny Scottish island of Todday reaches its quota of war-rationed whisky. When the freighter S.S. Cabinet Minister runs aground during a heavy fog, the tea-weary islanders are delighted to learn that its cargo is 50,000 cases of whisky.
Though their first attempt to capture the whisky is thwarted by observance of the Sabbath, the villagers manage to audaciously liberate the spirits. When English commanding officer Captain Waggett (Eddie Izzard) arrives, intent on reclaiming the coveted cargo, the local postmaster and his two daughters spearhead an ingenious plan to safeguard the booty.
Gillies Mackinnon directs Whisky Galore! from a screenplay by award-winning writer Peter McDougall, based on the novel by Compton Mackenzie. Shot on location in Scotland, the ensemble cast features veteran Scottish actors Gregor Fisher – as the genial postmaster Joe Macroon – and James Cosmo alongside new talents including Kevin Guthrie (Sunshine on Leith), Ellie Kendrick (Game of Thrones) and Naomi Battrick. Fenella Woolgar (Bright Young Things) adds a lively note to proceedings as Captain Waggett’s bemused spouse, Dolly.
“A very enjoyable affair…what makes the film so pleasurable is the humour and lyricism with which it tells its rousing story of whisky-loving small timers coming together to keep officialdom at bay.” The Independent
